  • What is the Kanban Maturity Model?

what_is_kmm
The Kanban Maturity Model (KMM) is an organizational processes improvement model with the Kanban Method.

The KMM codifies more than 10 years of experience implementing Kanban across diverse industries, in businesses small to extremely large. It can be used across teams, departments, or entire organizations.

It maps out 7 levels of maturity and shows how to successfully deploy the Kanban Method on each of them. It helps to move confidently from one level to another and greatly improve the economic performance of your business.

The KMM provides a roadmap and a means to interpret and appraise organizational maturity and readiness for any specific Kanban practice.
  • What is there in the KMM for me?

  • Pragmatic, actionable, evidence-based guidance to achieve true enterprise agility
  • More than 150 specific practices across 7 levels of organizational maturity

The Kanban Maturity Model helps us make sense of many different management practices and their countless variations that we see in real world companies. It gives us a pivot turning transformational visions into pragmatic plans of changing our organizations.

The KMM helped me to save a company from falling apart. I started working with this IT company back in 2020. Their owner was desperate: people were leaving, quality was going down, and clients were not satisfied. The company’s existence was on the line. The KMM did not only guide me on how to establish a healthy and steady workflow but also gave me ideas on how to onboard people to start the changing processes and try new practices. As a result, people stopped leaving, quality improved dramatically, lead times became predictable, teams delivered on time, and clients became satisfied. This company is still using the same practices and is successfully operating on the market.

The KMM is designed to avoid two main failure modes: overreaching – when you demand from the organization more than it can chew, or false summit plateau – when you reach a certain level and get stuck. But also, KMM tells you what to do. It helps the organization to figure out what outcome they want and design their managed evolutionary plan that will guide them to the outcomes they want. From a coaching perspective, the KMM is a playbook for implementing appropriate practices and evolving with time.

I see the KMM as a model that helps Coach or Change Agent to drive change. It is like a menu of available options from where you can pick the one suitable for your context. Different companies can benefit from using the KMM, regardless of their size or level of Kanban adoption. Anyone can find what is useful for their case. The main benefit of using the KMM is that it saves your time and resources. I think internal change agents, coaches in organizations, or managers that are responsible for change management will benefit from knowing the KMM the most.
